Corpus Christi Community Religious School

Jana Zager, Director

Classes resumed on January 5th, after a long winter break.  We welcomed new teachers, Brittany and Josh Sanbach, who will be taking over the 4th-6th grade Sunday School class.  We are so happy to have them join our team.
On Sunday, January 12th, the Religious School celebrated Tu B’shvat with a seder led by Laura Spector.  There, the kids were able to sample the 7 fruits of the season as they said the blessings.  Also, the entire school took a picture with the Holocaust Torah that is on loan to us from the Memorial Scrolls Trust in London.  February 9th will be the 50th anniversary of the receipt of the 1564 Holocaust Torahs into the care of this Trust.  There will be a major event in England and we have been invited as a holder of a Torah to send a poster featuring ours. Our 4th-6th grade Sunday School class will help decorate our poster.  Thank you to David Jacobs for taking the group picture.
This spring, Camp Young Judaea-Texas is hosting a variety of Jewish retreats.  Their upcoming events include Passover Camp (for the whole family), Spring Camp (for 1st-6th graders) and Women’s ReJEWvenation Weekend (for women 21 and up).  Their year round events provide a great way to build community with Jews from all over Texas and they would love for our community to take part. Family Corner

Shabbat Shalom Y'All,

January seemed to just fly by and it's hard to believe we are already entering the month of February.     For those of you that have been participating in our Family Shabbat Dinners, I thank you for attending and sharing the sabbath together.  Please spread the word to any newcomers or congregants you think would enjoy coming to a Friday dinner that have otherwise not done so yet.  What better way to start the weekend than to enjoy a home-cooked meal, meet new friends, and bring in Shabbat together!

Our next Family Shabbat Dinner will be on Friday, February 21st  at 6pm with dinner to follow.  Feel free to bring a dessert to share.  If anyone would like to help me in the kitchen, please give me a call!

Looking forward to breaking bread together,

Leslie Green

SCHOLARLY RABBI-IN-RESIDENCE:
RABBI SAMUEL M. STAHL

During the weekend of January 31 – February 2, 2014, we shall have the pleasure and honor of welcoming Rabbi Samuel M. Stahl of San Antonio to CBI.  Rabbi Stahl will be giving a series of three talks, focusing on the relations of Jews and Christians in contemporary American life.

Rabbi Stahl served twenty-six years as the Senior Rabbi  of Temple Beth El in San Antonio.  Prior to that time, he was the rabbi of Temple B’nai Israel in Galveston and a chaplain in the US Army.  He is deeply committed to enhancing interfaith relations and was the first Jewish leader to receive awards from the Texas Conference of Churches.  He is the author of two books and has been editor of the Journal of Reform Judaism.  He also serves on the staff of the Department of Religion at the Chautauqua Institution in New York state each summer.  He and hiss wife Lynn have two daughters and five grandchildren.

On Friday night during Shabbat services, he will discuss THE FUTURE OF NON-ORTHODOX JUDAISM.

On Saturday morning, we shall convene for our traditional services at 9:00 AM.  Following a brief Kiddush, we shall continue our usual Torah study session.  After a brief lunch, Rabbi Stahl will continue his series with a talk entitled A RABBI LOOKS AT CHRISTIANITY.  This talk will take place in the Racusin Chapel at 1:15 PM.

During Religious School on Sunday morning at 11:00 AM, Rabbi Stahl will address the issue of JEWS AND CHRISTIANS LOOK AT THE STATE OF ISRAEL.  This talk and the discussion to follow will take place in the Grossman Auditorium.  Light refreshments will be served at 10:30.

All of these programs are sponsored by the Adult Education Committee which offers them to our members and guests without charge.  We invite everyone to attend.

MARK YOUR MARCH CALENDARS FOR SPECIAL PROGRAMS

The Adult Education and Ritual Committees of CBI are proud to announce four special adult learning programs in March and early April.  Though we shall have more details in next month’s Newsletter, we hope you will already mark off time on your calendars and plan to be part of the adult group who study together.  All of these sessions will begin with coffee and a nosh at 10:30 AM, followed by the program from 11:00 until about noon.  They will take place in the Grossman Auditorium.  Everyone is invited without charge.

On Sunday, March 2, we shall have the privilege of talking directly with Dr. Weiss, head of medical research at the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem.  This long-distance telephone conversation has been arranged to help us understand the breadth and depth of the medical research that is being conducted in Israel and how it might impact on us.  In the light of attempts to stigmatize the Jewish state as an oppressor nation, it is particularly important for us to be able to describe Israel as a modern, technological bastion where compassionate care is offered to all citizens, regardless of religion and ethnicity.  We are all ambassadors for Israel, and this program will help us perform that function more effectively.

In later March and early April, Rabbi Roseman will offer three Sunday morning programs to help us understand the new prayer book of the Reform movement, Mishkan Tefillah.  The Ritual Committee is considering adopting this book, but no decision will be made until after Rabbi Emanuel arrives this July.  Still, it will be helpful to all of us and to the Committee if we understand what this new siddur is all about and how we might use it at CBI.  The plan is to have three sessions of learning, followed by several Friday evening services of materials selected from the prayer book.  The dates for these sessions are March 23, March 30 and April 6.  Just to give you an idea of the first topic (more details in March), the title of Rabbi Roseman’s first talk will be FROM THE BIBLE TO THE BIBLE BELT: CONTINUITY AND INNOVATION IN TODAY’S PRAYERS.

92Y SERIES CONTINUES ON TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 11

Please join us at 7:15 PM in the Racusin Chapel on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 as we continue our very popular 92Y lecture series.

The United States has embarked on an historically unprecedented engagement with Iran at a moment when the Middle East seems more volatile and unpredictable than ever.  As Jews, we are particularly concerned with Iran’s nuclear program and its continuing threats to the people and the State of Israel.  Where do we stand?  What has been achieved?  What are the prospects?  Join us as journalist and author Warren Kozak interviews acclaimed Middle East Expert Michael Doran.  Dr. Doran has served as a deputy assistant secretary of defense and a senior director at the National Security Council.

Everyone is cordially invited to attend this free program.
