Religious School

Our classrooms are in full swing with Ms. Laura’s students studying about Israel and creating wonderful presentations on their chosen cities while Brittany and Josh’s class learns about important Jewish Life events.  Hebrew school students are preparing for another upcoming student-led Shabbat.  Stayed tuned for details.

This month, we will be baking dozens of Hamentachen in celebration of Purim.  If you would like to assist in the making and baking, please join Sunday School on March 2nd at 10:30.  We’d love your help!

Also this month, Missy Goldstein, our ISJL Fellow will be joining us again for the weekend of March 21-23.  Please plan to attend our Family Shabbat that Friday night to give Missy a warm welcome.  If you would like to host Missy, please let me know.  This is a great opportunity for her to get to know other congregants.

Mark your calendars, we will only meet three times in March (March 2nd, 23rd and March 30th) due to Spring Break.

Family Corner

My apologies for not being able to cook our February Family Shabbat Dinner.  Like many, I got hit with the nasty stomach bug!

This month's Family Shabbat Dinner will take place on Friday, March 21st following 6 pm services and will have a Purim theme!  Remember, there will be NO Family Shabbat Dinner in April due to the Passover holiday.

If you have some extra time on your hands and would like to help in the kitchen, please give me a call or shoot me an email.

Until we break bread together again,

CBI Sisterhood

My goodness, what a wonderful Sisterhood Shabbat we celebrated on February 14th.  We conducted this service in honor of Phyllis Roseman.  Phyllis continues to work tirelessly for the good of Sisterhood and Congregation Beth Israel. We wanted to be sure Phyllis realizes how much we appreciate all she does for CBI.  There were approximately 100 people in attendance and we held a beautiful Oneg Shabbat after the service.  I would like to take a moment to thank everyone involved with this event, especially Chris Adler.  Without the help of Chris, I don’t know how I would have put this event together. (photos are posted in this bulletin)

In advance for our Sisterhood Shabbat, several members of Sisterhood went to Tipsy Canvas and painted pictures to use as decoration at the Oneg.  We really had a great time painting together.  There was a lot of laughter that night.  I can’t say all of them were “works of art” but it was a lot of fun.

On April 15, 2014, Sisterhood will be celebrating Passover with our annual community Seder.  Please get your reservations in early to insure your seat for this event.  This is always a popular gathering.  This year Passover will be co-chaired by Phyllis Roseman and Julia Noble.  Please feel free to contact them, if you have any questions concerning this event.  (reservation form included in this bulletin)

Adult Education Series Announced

We had originally anticipated a telephone conference call with the director of medical research at the Hadassah Medical Organization in Jerusalem for early March.  Unfortunately, the HMO is facing serious questions about its future, and they are apparently unable to commit to this session at this time.  Therefore, we are announcing a new schedule for March’s Adult Education Series.

The CBI Ritual Committee is joining the Adult Education Committee to sponsor a three-session discussion of the new prayer book of the Reform movement, Mishkan Tefillah.  The purpose of these presentations and discussions is to help members of CBI become familiar with this book and to voice their responses so that the Ritual Committee can work with Rabbi Ilan Emanuel next fall and decide whether to adopt the book or not.  Such a decision should be based on a full understanding of the characteristics of the book and an open process that takes into account the feelings of as many congregants as care to express themselves.

The three sessions will be held on Sunday mornings, beginning with coffee and a light nosh at 10:30 and the program at 11:00 AM.  They will be held in the Grossman Auditorium and all are, of course, welcome.

Shemira and Tahara

For many years our community has taken a great deal of pride in the fact that we can provide for surviving families the honor of Shemira (guard) and Tahara (purification) for their loved ones. Not many small Jewish communities provide those priceless services, especially not by volunteers and at no cost to the families.

As with other services provided by our community, it is becoming more difficult to meet the challenges confronting us. Members of the Chevra Kaddisha have moved out of the area or have passed away.
The above having been noted, there remains the need for these services in our community. We cannot afford as a community to hire someone from outside Corpus Christi to sit with our loved ones nor can we ask others to perform the task of Tahara. It would not demonstrate honor nor respect to our loved departed nor to their families.

Please consider volunteering for the honor of being a Shomer (sitting) or working with the Chevra Kaddisha. On behalf of those who cannot and the Cemetery Committee of Congregation Beth Israel, I thank you for giving this request serious consideration. Feel free to contact any member of the Cemetery Committee or Rabbi Roseman for additional information.
