Corpus Christi Community Religious School

I hope everyone had a Happy Passover!  Did your children tell you about the Chocolate seder we had in Religious School on April 13th?  Each class participated in reading the Haggadah and all of the seder plate items were chocolate!  I’m pretty sure it was a big hit!  Also, on April 11th, our students led Shabbat services and they did great!  With each opportunity to lead prayers, your child builds the confidence he/she needs to lead his/her Bar/Bat Mitzvah.  And, this gives the chance to reinforce what they have learned in Hebrew school.  It is important to make every effort to attend these short, hour long services.
Religious School would like to add a basketball net to the back parking lot area for the children to play with during their breaks.  As of now, there are no outside playground facilities for them to play on, so the addition of the basketball net would be ideal.  Is there anyone who might be willing to donate the funds to purchase the structure?  If so, please contact me.
We will wrap up Religious School this month on May 18th.  PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE IS NO RELIGIOUS SCHOOL ON MAY 11TH.  HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!

Family Corner

Shalom Everyone!!!

Although our Family Shabbat Dinners have ended for the season, we will be hosting our 3rd Annual Mother's Day Brunch on Sunday, May 11th at 10:00 am.  Each year, our congregants have participated more and more and I hope this year will be no exception.

Reservations are a MUST for this brunch, so please make sure you contact Debbie Bustillo at CBI no later than MAY 5TH.  We want to make sure we prepare plenty of food and have ample seating for everyone to attend!!  If you would like to help in the kitchen with the preparation, please give me a call.

It has been my absolute pleasure to cook for our congregation during this programming year and hope you will all continue to attend our Family Shabbat Dinners when they resume again in September!

With warm wishes to all for a safe, relaxing and fun summer ...

CBI Sisterhood

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the women of Sisterhood for the privilege of serving as President over the last three years.  This will be my last article before a new slate of officers is sworn in to serve as Sisterhood leaders on May 14th, during the installation luncheon at Katz 21.  I hope all of you are able to attend.

This year has been a very fun year with our final “fun-raiser” at Build-a-Bear.  There were 15 women who gathered to create stuffed animals which were donated to the Women’s Shelter.  We also managed to raise $100.00, which was donated to Rainbow Room.  Rainbow Room is an organization which assists CPS.  While these are great causes, the best part was getting together with everyone, creating the animals, then going to PF Chang’s for dinner and laughs.  It is a pleasure spending time with all these women.

The other event which took place recently was our annual, second night Passover Seder.  This year we were able to squeeze in 130 people for this extremely popular service.  Thank you to Rabbi Roseman for leading this service and for all you’ve done for Congregation Beth Israel over the years.  Also, a very special thank you to Phyllis Roseman and Julia Noble for spear-heading this event.  As always, you did an excellent job.

To everyone who has helped throughout this year, THANK YOU!  Sisterhood could not survive without all your help.  I look forward to another wonderful year, under new leadership in 2014-2015.

Best Wishes,
Robin Adams

92Y Series to Conclude on Thursday, May 22

On Thursday, May 22, at 7:00 P.M., we shall have the distinct privilege of listening to and learning from Nobel Laureate, ELIE WIESEL.  Author of 57 books, Wiesel was honored by the Norwegian Nobel Committee as “a messenger to mankind.”  They said that through his struggle to come to terms with “his own personal experience of total humiliation and of the utter contempt for humanity shown in Hitler’s death camps” as well as his “practical work in the cause of peace,” Wiesel has delivered a powerful message “of peace, atonement and human dignity” to mankind.

Wiesel’s most famous work, Night, chronicles his imprisonment by the Nazis in Auschwitz, Buna and Buchenwald.  Now in his mid-eighties, Elie Wiesel is an icon among interpreters of both the Jewish past and our present situation.  He has received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, a Congressional Gold Medal, the French Legion of Honor and the British Order of the British Empire, as well as numerous honorary degrees.

We do not know what Wiesel will speak about, but this is an unparalleled opportunity to hear the words of a very special person.  Try not to miss the evening.  Everyone is cordially invited, including guests of the congregation.  The showing will be in the main sanctuary because of the anticipated number of attendees.
