Religious School

We hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and are now gearing up for Hanukkah. Below is the Religious School schedule for December. We have a lot of fun activities planned. One big highlight for this month are two B’Nai Mitzvahs. Rebecca Simpson is being called to the Bimah on December 3rd and Aaron Lebowitz will be taking his turn on December 17th. Both these students have been preparing and are well on track to achieve their spiritual maturity, which has been defined as the ability to experience the depth and complexity of life. Please consider attending these children’s B’Nai Mitzvah and welcome them into our Jewish community as spiritual adults.

Aaron Lebowitz has chosen to bring attention to the Texas Sea Life Center for his Bar Mitzvah Project. The Texas Sea Life Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of coastal and aquatic wildlife right here on Padre Island. Aaron would like to host a tour for our religious school students on December 11th after regular religious school classes. The Lebowitz family has generously offered to provide pizza for all students for lunch right after religious school at CBI. We will then need parent volunteers to drive the students out to the Island for a tour. Aaron will be teaching the students about the work he does out there and will educate the kids about the services the Texas Sea Life Center offers. Aaron and his family have volunteered for this fantastic organization over the past year and he would like to share his experience with all of you. All students will need to have a signed permission slip in order to participate. Please contact Manuela or I if you are willing to drive and please let us know how many students you can transport ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ). Permission slips will be available at our next religious school class.

Menorah Beautification

CBI Friends and Family,

As many of you know, the large menorah wall located in the front of our building has been completely restored and now the menorah is displayed in a beautiful blue tile. This was a major project for our Temple but the results were well worth the effort.

To commemorate this significant event, the Temple commissioned a New York firm to create a beautiful Menorah Beautification Plaque which is displayed in the Temple. The plaque has a limited number 1x5 inch brass name plates available at the cost of $100.00 per plate to memorialize your name or the name of a loved one as being a part of this significant project. Interest expressed has been high and we encourage you to secure your name plates at your earliest convenience so you do not miss the opportunity to do so.

All funds collected will be donations to Congregation Beth Israel and used to replace the significant cost of the menorah beautification.

*Please contact CBI Office for any questions.

SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEE

We need 8 volunteers to serve the Christmas Meal on Christmas Day for the homeless shelters at Metro Ministries. (located at 1927 Leopard St.)

The food will already be prepared and heated, our commitment is to do the serving and clean-up between 11:30-2:00. We need five as servers and kitchen helpers that have their food handlers license, the other five cleaners don't need the license. Are there any bakers? We'd like to provide some home-made cookies. There are generally 70 residents.

For the last few years Metro Ministries residents in the homeless shelters had to go somewhere else to eat a Christmas meal. With CBI doing this mitzvah it allows the residents to eat in their own building and the staff to be with their families.

If you can help  call or email Linda Snider.

—An additional request—

The Women's Shelter needs bras and underwear.
(These can be left in a bag at the Temple and they will be delivered)
