A Message from the Family Corner

Our next Family Shabbat Dinner is on October 2nd.  Please join us as we celebrate Sukkot.  Bring your favorite dessert if you would like.

April Chessher is our child-care provider on Friday nights.  Please remember to sign your children in and out of the child-care room, as we do not want them roaming the halls during services.

I hope you all have enjoyed the High Holy Days and feel ready to start our new year!!

                 Shalom

         January     22                         June     18

We encourage you to enter these dates on your calendar now so that you will be able to attend these services when they occur.

ADULT EDUCATION COMMITTEE ANNOUNCES THREE LECTURES

At the request of the Adult Education Committee, Rabbi Roseman will be summarizing the course he taught to advanced history students at TAMUCC last year.  The course was entitled “The History of Religion in America,” and it will be offered again in the fall of 2010.  In this course, Rabbi Roseman outlined for the students major developments in American Religious History, and he will take three Sunday mornings to highlight the major trends.

On Sunday, October 4 at 10:30 AM, he will add address the documents that established the United States of America and the religious ideas that they contained.  He will also highlight the one most important word in the history of American religion.

On Sunday, October 18 at 10:30 AM, he will continue with a talk about the role that religion played in America in terms of the development of the American character, stressing the different roles that religion played in various sub-groups of the American population.

Finally, on Sunday, October 25 at 10:30 AM, Rabbi Roseman will discuss the crisis of belief that occurred in the early twentieth century, how it played out in the work of various religious groups and what we are doing about it today.

Light refreshments will be offered at 10:00 AM on all three days in the Grossman Auditorium.  There is no charge, and everyone is cordially invited to attend.

RABBI ROSEMAN IN THE COMMUNITY

On Thursday, October 1 at 7:00 PM  at the Art Museum of South Texas, Rabbi Roseman will take part in a program commemorating the fiftieth year of the publication of To Kill A Mockingbird.  Originally published in 1960, this book became an instant classic of American literature.  Our Rabbi has been selected as to read about fifteen minutes of his favorite selections from this remarkable novel.

Then, on October 13 at noon, he will deliver the invocation at the Corpus Christi City Council.

ADULT EDUCATION RETREAT SCHEDULED

On Saturday, February 6, we shall gather at 10:00 AM at the Rockport Yacht Club for the first of our three learning sessions about the MAKING OF RABBINIC JUDAISM.

Our guest speaker will be Rabbi Judith Abrams of Houston, a well-known and dynamic interpreter of the literature and history of the period from the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem to the publication of the Babylonian Talmud (approximately 70 CE to 600 CE).  The documents of this period are often seen as arcane and difficult to understand, but Rabbi Abrams makes them come alive with her lively presentations, her delightful humor and her vivacious personality.  We count ourselves enormously fortunate to have such a gifted scholar join us for our retreat and hope you will look forward to meeting her and learning from her.

The retreat will continue Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.  Arrangements have been made for all meals and for lodging at the Hampton Inn in Rockport.   Saturday evening’s program is designed to produce smiles and fellowship; you won’t want to miss it!   Scholarship funds are available to assist anyone who needs financial help in attending.

A detailed flyer with reservation information will be mailed out soon.  Meanwhile, mark your calendars and hold the dates.  This is a special opportunity open only to members of CBI.
