What's Going On - September 2009 PDF Print E-mail

Welcome back from summer! I would like to encourage you all to attend our Shabbat Dinners. These dinners are typically once a month and follow services. There will be no Shabbat Dinner during the month of September due to the High Holy Days.

I am always open to hearing new ideas, so please feel free to work with me on creating a fun, safe, creative learning environment for all of our children

During the High Holydays, Congregation Beth Israel offers its members the opportunity to engage in an additional act of tzedakah by contributing to the High Holyday Appeal. You will receive a more detailed letter describing this year’s goals of the Appeal, but we want you to know in brief what the funds will be used for. There are three objectives:

  1.  The summer was rough on all of us and particularly on the air conditioning systems at the congregation. We have a number of air handling issues that must be addressed by next Spring.
  2. Our family dinner program has grown significantly. We’re delighted, but the additional attendance places a financial burden on the congregation. We also want to discontinue placing a bowl for financial donations at the door on Shabbat evening.
  3. While every sign indicates that the economy is beginning to improve, we still have members of the congregation who need a little extra help. We estimate that the requests will be fewer this year, but there will be some. The remainder of the 2008 Appeal funds and some from this year will help make CBI the caring and compassionate congregation we all hope it can be.

"To offer and promote opportunities for CBI members to engage in Tikkun Olam"
In September:
High Holy Days Food Drive - Put aside non-perishable food and paper products for our annual
High Holy Days Food Drive, which SAC Committee will collect between Rosh Hashanah and Sukkot.
We will once again be collecting monetary donations for the Corpus Christi Food Bank, as well.

Recycling -
CBI is recycling, I hope you are too! Look for recycle bins in the CBI kitchen and in the
office. Please contact Diana if you would like to help with and promote this mitzvah.

Health Care Reform -
SAC Committee encourages members to get involved in the Health Care
debate. Most Jewish organizations have taken a strong stand for comprehensive health reform.
Please research this issue, and join the conversation!

L'Shanah Tovah!!

The prophet Isaiah wrote that the fast that God desires is not self-affliction, but that we should distribute our bread to the poor and the needy. We read this lesson in the Haftarah of Yom Kippur morning. It is especially relevant this year when the food banks of the Coastal Bend have already told us that their stocks are perilously close to depleted and that the needs they foresee are greater than in previous years.

In particular, we need non-perishable foodstuffs. Cans of high protein food, like tuna fish, meat and hearty
soups are very welcome. Peanut butter is always a good choice, as are pasta items. In addition, non-food
items, like disposable diapers and toiletries, will be very helpful to those who are in need. If you prefer a
cash contribution, we can forward that to the Food Bank, where they can add the money to their bulk food purchases.

We shall collect all donations beginning with Selichot (September 12) and ending with Sukkot (October 3). Immediately thereafter, we shall arrange to have everything transported to the Corpus Christi Food Bank where the staff will shelve it and then distribute it to recipients according to their guidelines.

In advance, the Social Action Committee thanks you for your generous support of our efforts to
help the less fortunate among our neighbors.
