Corpus Christi Community Religious School

Even though we had Spring Break during March, we had a busy and fun-filled time as we baked Hamantachen for Purim and welcomed Missy Goldstein, from ISJL, who provided an active and interactive morning full of activities.

A HUGE “Thank You” to Hamantachen helpers Margaret Barnett, Sheree Fedder, Norma Levens, Amanda Mintz, Julia Noble, Meredith Ryan, Tobi Taubman and Kim Yaker! We were able to make, bake and send home lots of Hamanetachen with each student in time for Purim.

Missy visited during the weekend of March 21-23. We enjoyed her lovely voice as she led Friday night services to a special Beatles themed service.  On Sunday, she organized a scavenger hunt for the Hebrew schoolers who searched for the Hebrew letters throughout the building.  The middle-schoolers were led in an interesting conversation about cyber bullying while the religious school kids participated in a life sized board game that explored Texas Jewish history.

Please be sure to join us on April 11th for our second student-led Shabbat. Your kids will help lead the service, so be sure not to miss it!

As a reminder, there will be NO RELIGIOUS SCHOOL on April 20th in observance of Passover.

Shalom,
Jana

Family Corner

It warmed my heart to see such a fabulous turnout for our March Family Shabbat Dinner!  A special thank you to Jana Zager for helping me prepare the meal for everyone.

Please make a note, there will be NO Family Shabbat Dinner during April, but CBI will be hosting its 2nd night Passover community Seder on Tuesday, April 15th.  Please call Debbie Bustillo at CBI for a reservation form or you can find one in your CBI newsletter.  If you're thinking about coming, let me tell you it is a fun-filled evening with Passover surprises by Rabbi Roseman, delicious food, and a warm feeling of the community coming together as a whole to celebrate this Passover holiday.  The “sweetest” part of the Seder is Phyllis Roseman's matzoh candy!

March was our last family dinner.  We will end our year with our 3rd annual Mother's Day Brunch on Sunday, May 11th at 10:00 am.  Reservations will be required, and I hope you will join us to celebrate this special occasion.

The boys and I want to wish all of you a zeisen Pesach (sweet Passover) and can't wait to break matzoh together!!

COFTY

Youth group for 8th through 12th grade Students

In honor of the celebration of Purim, the COFTY temple youth group baked hamantashen and delivered them around the city to congregants of the temple. The temple youth group has become active this year and is an associated group with National Federation of Temple Youth, also known as NFTY. NFTY is a Jewish federation across America whose goal is to get the youth involved in temple life. The COFTY youth group very much enjoyed baking  and delivering hamantashen and being able to get involved with the temple activities.

YIZKOR SERVICE FOR PASSOVER

It is a long-standing Jewish custom to gather at the end of the Passover festival to remember those who are no longer with us.  Our thoughts turn to the many joyous times when we sat with them around the seder table, celebrating with prayer and song and warm conversation, not to mention a delicious meal.  Those times may no longer be possible, but we recreate them in our minds and treasure them as we recall the lives of our loved ones.

This year’s Yizkor Service will be held at CBI on Monday, April 21 at 6:00 PM.  This choice represents an acknowledgement that some of our members observe Pesach for seven days (and so this is the end of the seventh day), while others keep the festival for eight days (and so this is the beginning of the eighth day).   We invite everyone to join together for a special time of remembrance at the end of the Pesach festival.

YOM HASHOAH SERVICE

We are very pleased to announce that this year’s Yom HaShoah Memorial Service will be conducted in collaboration with the Episcopal Church of Reconciliation (the church about two blocks east of CBI on Saratoga Blvd.).

We invite you to gather at 4:30 PM on Sunday, April 27 at the Church.  In their front yard is a labyrinth.  A labyrinth is a very old pattern on the ground that serves as an aid for meditation and spiritual focus.  Walking this pre-set path may help us think more deeply about the Holocaust and about our response to the greatest Jewish tragedy of our time.  It is a technique to help us be in touch with thoughts and feelings that are part of us but that we may have repressed or neglected.

When we have individually completed our walk, we shall walk along Saratoga to CBI where the actual Yom HaShoah Service will begin at 5:30 PM.  In this service, we shall be joined by members of the Church of Reconciliation and any community guests who care to share these sacred moments with us.
