What's Going On - February 2016 PDF Print E-mail

January was a very fun month, kicked off by a visit from our ISJL fellow, Bethany Berger. I would encourage all of you to look at the ISJL website (www.isjl.org) to explore all that this  unique organization has to offer. Our students all had the opportunity to celebrate Tu B’Shevat and to plant parsley to take home and grow in time for Passover. A big thank you goes out to Diana Stillman, Julia Noble and all of the parents who volunteered to make our Tu B’Shevat event a success.

Please remind your children that the Temple is a place for worship and should be respected. Please let them know that they are expected to clean up after themselves and that the inside of the building is not a playground. Our project that Bethany helped us to create was ripped off of the walls after a Friday night service and we now no longer get to enjoy their art. We work to incorporate breaks during our Religious School day so that the kids can burn off some energy outside. I am grateful for your support and I hope that you will help me to instill not only knowledge in your children but an appreciation and respect for their religion and the building where we come to worship and learn.

Shalom Y'All,

January's Family Shabbat Dinner with our taco bar was a big hit!  We had an amazing turnout and I want to thank everyone for attending and supporting our family dinners.  I think we hit an all time record for the most desserts brought to a family dinner too!!  Please spread the word to any newcomers or congregants you think would enjoy coming to a Friday dinner that have otherwise not done so yet.  What better way to start out the weekend than to enjoy a home-cooked meal, meet new friends, and bring in Shabbat together!

Our next dinner is scheduled for Friday, February 12th at 6:00 pm with dinner to follow.  Please bring a dessert to share and your appetites as well!  I could always use some help in the kitchen, so let me know if you are available.

Looking forward to breaking bread together,

Leslie Green
Family Shabbat Dinner Coordinator

Happy February y’all!  I have great news to share this month!  The numbers are tabulated and the 2015 Food Fest brought $44,699 profit to our Sisterhood!  We are so blessed to have so many people who worked so hard and contributed so much to make this possible.  I can’t name them all, but I must mention a few who gave so much of themselves.  Enormous thanks to Julia Noble, Mike Trimeyer, Rikki Schmitchel, Debbie Bustillo, Amy Krams, our bakers, cabbage rollers, soup makers, brisket bakers, slicers, dicers and pullers.  We make an amazing team!

Sunday, February 28:   Sisterhood Fun Day at Fire It Ceramics
                              (invitations to follow)
Saturday, April 23: Congregational Passover Seder
(be sure to make your reservations next month)

The Genesis of Faith

February 6 & 13 @ 11am
CBI—Grossman Auditorium
Join us as we learn about our shared scriptural tradition together with members of All Saints Episcopal Church.  We will be studying the stories in the first 3 chapters of Genesis (Creation and Adam and Eve) from the perspectives of our different interpretive traditions, learning how we see these shared text differently and what we can learn from each others' different perspectives.

Many of our CBI members recently attended an interesting presentation given by Ron Bernstein about the Israel Movement for Reform and Progressive Judaism (IMPJ). He and his family live in Israel and he is the Development and Overseas Relations Southwest Small Jewish Communities representative, which includes our congregation.
It was encouraging to learn that there are currently 45 Reform communities in Israel and 15,000 Israeli in the Reform or Conservative movement. This movement has four components: Education, Summer Camp, Pre-Army (one year after High School) Post-Army (working on Kibbutz), and Social Action and Outreach. There is a particular focus on the youth and bringing the Reform curriculum, values and teaching tolerance into the school system.

Two areas of outreach are:
-Pairing Israeli and Arab communities on a monthly basis for talks with the goal of increasing understanding and peace.
-Israeli Action Center (IAC), specifically formed to help Russians who emigrate to Israel.
The IMPJ is committed to ensuring that all Israelis are treated with dignity and respect and for everyone to be recognized and allowed to have pluralistic and egalitarian options when celebrating life cycle events.
In order for the Reform movement to continue growing and develop a strong presence in Israel they need our support.  For more information their website is www.reform.org.il/Eng
A donation can be sent to:  ARZA or WUPJ                            Designate IMPJ on your check.
