A Message from the Family Corner

Thank you so much to Susan Martin and Iris Karas for helping me prepare the last Shabbat dinner.  Iris stepped in very graciously when I was unexpectedly unable to attend. I am very grateful to all of the people who have helped prepare the dinners this past year.  What a difference it makes when a group of us are talking, cooking and laughing.  The dinners have provided a sense of camaraderie and cohesiveness, an opportunity for congregants to get to know each other and catch up with friends.  We will pick back up with the dinners in August.  Have a  wonderful summer!

As always, please remember that if you would like to have your child utilize the childcare during services, please make sure to check them in and out.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Meredith Ryan at 960-0698.

Shalom,
Meredith Ryan

Corpus Christi Community Religious School

It’s hard to believe that our school year is over.  I am a believer that the older we get, the quicker time passes by.

Was anyone wondering what happened to all the pencils collected by Chelsea’s fifth, sixth, and seventh graders?  Erasers, sharpeners, and over 1,000 pencils were sent to the Step-up Center in Moshi, Tanzania.  The daughter of a friend spent time earlier this year volunteering at the facility which provides day-care center services to young children in this poverty stricken area. She assured me that the supplies would be well-received.

Our “End of Year Celebration” was held at the JCC on Sunday, May 23rd.  It was wonderful to see so many students and their families enjoying pizza and swimming in the newly refurbished pool.  We appreciate Amy and the JCC for letting us use the facilities.

I want to thank the dedicated CCCRS staff for a great year.  Sunday teachers were Elisa Cox, Meredith Hilliard, Rikki Schmitchel, Chelsea Eisenberg, Brian Honigbaum, and Dave Ryan.  Instructing our Hebrew students on Thursdays were Meredith Hilliard, Michael Lieber, and Rabbi Roseman.  We also had great substitutes – Mara Butler, Suzy Hilliard, Laurie McKinley, and Julia Noble.

As I mentioned last month, I will be attending the annual conference of the Institute of Southern Jewish Life at the end of June.  If you have any questions or concerns regarding our curriculum, this is the time to let me know so that I can have them addressed.

    Enjoy your summer!
    Shalom,
    Susan

EXEMPLARY SERVICE AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Rona Train, former president of CBI and chair of the Exemplary Service Award Committee, has announced that the 2010 award will be shared by two individuals: Andy Lehrman and Susan Martin.

Andy served as President of Beth Israel Synagogue and then was elected to the CBI Board following the merger of the two congregations in November 2005.  Upon the completion of Rona’s term as President, he succeeded her and served two years in that post.  He continues today on the CBI Board and Executive Committee in the role of Past President and has been a valued advisor of Maury Wolfson, our current President.  He is married to Iris,  and their son, Jeff, has recently graduated from law school and returned to Corpus Christi.  We look forward to welcoming another generation of the Lehrman family into our community.

Susan Martin grew up at Temple Beth El.   Daughter of Joe and Dorothy Jessel, she became a public school teacher, married Bill, and raised their family in our city.  Following her retirement from the school system, Susan became Director of Religious Education at CBI, a position she continues to fill with the kind of diligence, thoughtfulness and caring we have come to expect from her.  She also helps out in our office and sets up the sanctuary for Friday evening services, including finding and illuminating the appropriate Yahrzeit lights.

We are intensely proud of these two leaders of our congregation and congratulate them on the award.
