What's Going On - August 2013 Print

Corpus Christi Religious School

Hello Everyone!
I am looking forward to starting out this school year as your new Religious School Director.  I have recently returned from an ISJL (Institute of Southern Jewish Life) conference in Jackson, MS where I have learned many wonderful ideas that I hope to share with our teachers and students.  ISJL was created to service small Southern Jewish communities like ours and has developed a comprehensive religious school curriculum and support program that is being used by over 75 congregations in thirteen states.  The support program provides a fellow who will visit our community several times during the year to help with curriculum and other programs. Our new ISJL fellow, Missy Goldstein, will pay us a short visit on August 18th to get acquainted and for a teacher training session.  She will be back in the fall to meet our congregation, so please look out for that announcement and plan to meet her.
We will begin Hebrew and Sunday school on September 8th at 9:15 a.m.  If you know of any families that are interested in Sunday School, please encourage them to attend registration and check us out! Plan to register on that day as the children attend their first session in the classroom.  There will be a brief gathering to kick-off the year.  Looking forward to seeing you soon and I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer!
Shalom!

 Family Corner

Shalom Y'All,

I hate to admit it, but I can't believe the summer is almost over!  I sure hope you all relaxed and enjoyed time with your families.  A new school year is starting, and this means our Family Shabbat Dinners are too!

Please join us for our first dinner on Friday, August 30th.  Services will begin at 6:00 pm and dinner will follow.  Make sure to read your CBI Newsletter for the upcoming monthly dinners, holiday schedules,  as well as all the activities planned for the coming year.

I am always looking for “new” helpers in the kitchen, so if you have any interest at all in cooking with me, please call or email me.  We have lots of fun and it's a great way to make new friends and get involved in our CBI family!

I am always open to suggestions for menus, favorite dishes, or food you would like me to cook for our upcoming dinners and would love to hear from you.  Keep in mind, we will continue to provide “kosher style” meals, keeping dairy and meat separate.

Enjoy the rest of the summer and we will be breaking bread together before you know it ...

 YOUTH GROUP RESUMES ACTIVITY

We are very pleased to announce that our CBI Youth Group will resume activity after a couple of years of quiescence.  We now have at least sixteen young people who are past the age of Bar and Bat Mitzvah, and we want to offer them Jewish involvements that are both fun and educational.  We are grateful that Melissa and Rick Balkin have volunteered to serve as adult advisors and that Julia Noble will function as the group’s liaison to the synagogue board.  Maya Hiatt will assist the Balkins in a number of capacities, beginning with the design of an invitation for the first gathering.

If you have a young person in grades 8-12, you and your young person will receive an invitation to an event on August 18th from 12pm to 2pm at CBI.  At that time, we shall talk with parents about their role in supporting our youth activities program, and we shall have some interesting and enjoyable activities for the members of the youth group.  Among those activities will be the first opportunity to “milk” HOLY COW! so that the money that has been sliding down her throat and into her milk container can be sent to the Good Samaritan Mission for the support of the poor and homeless who are their clients.  A prize will be awarded to the member of the group whose guess is closest to the actual amount of money in her milk can.

 COFTY

*Calling all 8th grade through 12th grade students and their parents*

Watch your mail for an invitation to the CBI Youth Group Kick-Off meeting!

With your help, we will be reestablishing the Congregation Beth Israel Youth Group (CoFTY), a Temple Youth Group affiliated with the National Federation of Temple Youth (NiFTY).  Please join us on Sunday, August 18th, from 12 to 2 pm for an informational meeting. Get ready to catch up with friends and to share your ideas for activities and programming. Pizza will be served.

We look forward to planning with you!

 CBI Sisterhood

Although we are still enjoying a summer break, Sisterhood is hard at work, planning for the coming year.  Jill Jacobs and Susan Martin are planning our membership “kick-off” party (details to follow).  Susan Martin, along with the help of Barbara Schwamb, Jackie Hausman, and Summer Hausman are already starting to organize our Rosh Hashanah Oneg and Yom Kippur Break-fast.  Jana Zagar, Meredith Ryan, and Chris Kuehn are also already beginning to plan Food Fest 2013.  I would like to thank everyone who has committed to help with Food Fest and other projects with Sisterhood this year.  Your time is truly appreciated.

Dues letters have been sent to the women of our Jewish community.  If you did not get a dues letter, please let me know by calling 851-2581 or email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
